Dr. Bari - AGpO's first female Board President and a Pioneer in Dentistry

The landscape of dentistry in the U.S. has seen a significant shift towards greater female representation over the past two decades. In 2001, only 16% of licensed dentists were female, a number that more than doubled to 38% by 2023. This remarkable growth reflects a surge in women entering dental school, leading to a larger percentage of female graduates who are actively shaping the profession's demographics. Concurrently, women are increasingly occupying leadership positions in dental societies, academia, and various organizations, further solidifying their impact. Pioneers like Kathleen O'Loughlin, the first female executive director of the American Dental Association, and Carol Turner, the first female chief of the Navy Dental Corps, have paved the way for this increased representation, building on a rich history of groundbreaking female dentists.

This evolving environment offers compelling opportunities for women, including an incredible work-life balance within a leading healthcare field. Dr. Bari, the 2024-2025 AGpO Board President, embodies this spirit of leadership and dedication. At 52, this Rosenberg, Texas-based general dentist operates KRB Dentistry, a practice renowned for providing quality dental care to a diverse patient base. Dr. Bari's journey began in India, where her physician mother instilled in her a fascination for healthcare and community service. Arriving in Baltimore at age 8, she navigated cultural adjustments and skepticism with a relentless drive to serve others. "I understood my position in society," she reflects, "and came to terms with the fact that I needed to work harder to achieve my ambitious goal of becoming a doctor."

With 24 years of experience, Dr. Bari not only directs KRB Dentistry but also passionately advocates for her patients, ensuring they receive the highest quality of care. Her commitment to providing comprehensive dentistry, including advanced services like orthodontics, was significantly enhanced by her completion of the rigorous 12-session AGpO Orthodontics Course in Austin from 2012-2014. This comprehensive training equipped her to proficiently integrate orthodontic solutions into her general practice, serving a wider range of patient needs. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Bari is passionate about mentoring younger colleagues who are struggling with complicated cases or seeking innovative ways to provide care to a diverse patient base, often drawing on her broad skillset and the expanded capabilities gained through her AGpO training.

She extends her dedication to service through volunteer work at local clinics, fostering service-based care among dental students, and her annual dental mission trips to Mexico.

Dr. Bari has witnessed firsthand the significant advancements in the dental industry, both in science and technology, and in the expanding opportunities for women and minorities. "Today I can be unapologetically true to my identity and practice with confidence,"<source-footnote ng-version="0.0.0-PLACEHOLDER"></source-footnote> she states, "delivering care with empathy based in faith, humility, and honor."

By understanding the nuances of orthodontic treatment, general dentists can help patients achieve optimal oral health and aesthetics.

Broadening Your Practice: The Business Advantages of Orthodontic Training

Offering orthodontic services can serve as a competitive advantage for general dentists, allowing practices to attract a broader patient base. With orthodontic training, dentists can diversify their service offerings, making their practice a one-stop shop for both preventive and corrective dental care.

Furthermore, by retaining orthodontic treatments within their practice, dentists can increase patient loyalty and satisfaction, leading to higher retention rates and ultimately boosting practice revenue.

Bridging the Gap: How Orthodontic Training Complements General Dentistry

Orthodontic training complements general dentistry by enhancing the overall quality of care provided to patients. With a solid understanding of orthodontics, general dentists can improve their diagnostic capabilities, enabling them to address complex dental issues that may involve alignment and occlusion.

Unlocking Orthodontics: A General Dentist's Guide to Expanding Your Practice

Understanding the Basics of Orthodontics for General Dentists

Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. For general dentists, having a solid grasp of orthodontic principles is essential to understand how to integrate these services effectively into their practice.

Familiarizing yourself with common orthodontic terms, treatment options like braces and aligners, and the importance of proper alignment can help you better serve patients who may need orthodontic care.

Benefits of Offering Orthodontic Services in Your Practice

Adding orthodontic services to your practice can significantly enhance patient care. Patients prefer a one-stop-shop for their dental needs, and offering orthodontics allows you to meet that demand while providing comprehensive care.

Moreover, incorporating orthodontics can boost your practice's revenue. Orthodontic treatments often come with higher fees compared to standard dental services, which can positively impact your bottom line.

Essential Training and Certification for General Dentists in Orthodontics

To offer orthodontic services, general dentists should pursue additional training and certification. Various organizations offer courses that cover the fundamentals of orthodontics, including hands-on experience with different techniques.

Continuing education in orthodontics not only enhances your skills but also builds patient trust. Patients are more likely to choose your practice if they know you have specialized training in the services you provide.

The Academy of Gp Orthodontics offers over 38 years of experience in orthodontic education, providing courses where students treat real patients. These 12-session courses, held one weekend every two months, include Friday lectures and Saturday hands-on training. The curriculum covers patient malocclusions and the Differential Straight-Arch® Technique, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
