The Academy of Gp Orthodontics, founded by Dr. Charles D. Yates in 1987, is a
nonprofit organization providing professional membership services and growth and networking opportunities through continuing education programs in orthodontics for the general dentist, pedodontist and their staff. A highly qualified team of instructors, clinical instructors, and hosts provide on-going support and invaluable comprehensive clinical hands-on training with direct patient treatment to ensure excellent case results.
Dr. Charles D. YatesAs a Dallas, Texas area pedodontist for over 40 years, Dr. Yates had used early treatment techniques and functional appliances exclusively in his practice. However in the early 1960’s, realizing their limitations, he took additional C.E. hours and incorporated a full-banded light wire orthodontic technique. In the early 1970’s realizing the advantages of a course for non-specialists, Dr. Yates began teaching orthodontics to general dentists and pedodontists. He assisted Dr. Richard Moore, an orthodontist from El Paso, Texas, a longtime friend and mentor, with classes from 1974 until 1979. In 1968, Dr. Yates established the Dallas Orthodontic Study Club and was a founding director of the American Orthodontic Society in Dallas, Texas in 1974. In 1987 with the development of the Differential Straight-Arch® Technique (or Tip-Edge® System), Dr. Yates changed his course format from a weekend typodont course to the comprehensive hands-on concept, in a clinical setting with patients. This dedication to teaching orthodontics led to the formation of The Academy of Gp Orthodontics in 1987. Dr. Yates continued his collaboration with TP Orthodontics in its research and development of the Plus Bracket until his death in 1992. Governing Board The Academy is governed by a slate of officers, directors and an advisory board. It is registered and incorporated in the State of Texas. The organization is nationally recognized for its unique hands-on format and its membership network of general dentists and specialists striving for excellence in orthodontics.
